The need of land is increasing inline with the increase of the growth of population as well as the pace of physical development in an area. It is best that the development performance is not just only to meet the people needs, but also should pay attention on environmental preservation. In every development activities, selection of location often becomes problem needs to get attention related to physical aspect, legal aspect and cultural social aspect. Reality shows that land availability issue for the use of sustainable land still become a constraint. The objectives of this research are to provide recommendation on sustainable land use by paying attention on physical aspect, legal aspect and cultural social aspect, so the land use and utilization in context of an area development has been in accordance with the land ability.
Research method used was descriptive qualitative method with spatial approach. Data collection technic was through interpretation of land use map, land occupation map, as well as land ability map digitally. Data analysis technic used was analysis spatial method with map overlay technic using Geographic Information System (GIS) so it produces map of land use suitability and land availability map for sustainable land use.
Research result indicated that the area of Muaro Jambi District percentage of existing land use suitability with the direction of land use according to land ability class was as wide as 527.072,9 ha or 99,99% from total area, whereas percentage of the discrepancies was only 78,8 ha (0,01%). Then, the land availability for the activity of land use opimization occupied the most
comprehensive area namely 420.496,4 ha (79,77%). Land availability for all types of land use occupied over 105.834,6 ha (20,08%) area. Land availability for the use of plantation, savanna, and forest was as wide as 743,2 ha (0,14%), whereas land availability for activity of land use conformity was only 77,5 ha (0,01%). In other words, in Muaro Jambi District area there were still available lands to be developed with various type of land used according to the land availability or to be developed in order to optimize the land use.
The contribution of this research for Ministry of Agrarian and Spatial Planning/National Land Agency beside it can be used as consideration material for the drafting and revising of Regional Spatial Plan (RTRW), can also be used as a recommendation of land technical as a basis of location license issuance, location determination and permit for the change of land use.
